1L Study Aids

There are various types of study aids; listed below is a brief description of each.

  • Treatise: A comprehensive or exhaustive review of a specific area of law. Treatises are often multivolume with heavy footnoting and are usually supplemented to stay current.

  • Hornbook: A less detailed, one-volume treatment of an area of law in a narrative summary form. A hornbook is thorough but not as comprehensive as a treatise.

  • Nutshell: A paperback series of brief treatments of legal topics published by West. Nutshells contain fewer footnotes and references than hornbooks.

  • Examples & Explanations: A series that provides an alternative perspective to help you understand your casebook and class lectures, written in a conversational style.
