Faculty Publishing Guide: ORCID

This guide is intended to introduce ORCID and how it can assist in increasing scholarly impact.

ORCiD (Open Researcher & Contributor ID) is an open, non-profit, community-driven effort to create and maintain a registry of unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers. ORCID iD distinguish individuals with common names, and are not affected by name changes, cultural differences in name order, inconsistent abbreviations, or the use of different alphabets.

Should I have an ORCID iD?

Yes!

An ORCID iD is an easy solution for common publishing issues, such as:

  • Name changes due to marriage or divorce;
  • Mistaken identities due to a common name;
  • Using an initial
  • Names that use non-Latin characters.

ORCID iDs connect all your work, even if you have published under a different name. It can also serve as an open access, constantly updated curriculum vitae. Most importantly, many publishers are now requiring some or all authors to have an ORCID iD.
